Trip Summary

Dismals Canyon is a National Natural Landmark owned privately and open to the public that offers cabins and a beautiful hike and creek stomping seasonally. The property offers hiking and swimming options, but the real reason to stay is when it gets dark, Dismalites, also known as glow worms, light up the canyon. There are only a few places on the globe where glow worms can be seen, and one is right here! Night tours are offered and can be booked on the Dismal Canyon website. After a fun night at Dismals Canyon, head just down the road to enjoy a float on Bear Creek. Their morning and afternoon floats are perfect for families with waterfalls and great swimming along the paddle trail. Be sure to pack or pick up lunch in Russellville or Hackleburg and enjoy your munchies on a rock in the sun.

  • If you decide to expand your paddle in the Bear Creek area, please note that Bear Creek runs out of the Upper Bear Creek Reservoir and water levels can change rapidly.
    • This Reservoir is controlled by TVA under the Bear Creek Development Authority and has regular dam releases throughout the year. If you plan on paddling the area without a guide, be aware of the dam schedule and changing water levels. More information can be found here.
