Join us in the second annual Wilcox County Summer Cleanup. We join the citizens of Wilcox County—home of Camden and Gees Bend, where the famous quilters ply their craft—to help them with their goal of making the county the "cleanest in Alabama." Our paddling contingent uses grabbers and plastic bags to unlitter the river banks while scouts, grandmothers, church groups and many other pick up the byways, highways, and sidewalks throughout the county.

After the pickup ends at noon, there will be a cookout held for the entire group which any of our participants are welcome to attend. Or, you're welcome to piddle or paddle around Roland Cooper State Park where our crew will be camped. Our job this year is to launch from the Park and pick up the banks of nearby areas.

We've worked with Park Manager Mickey Luker (334 682 4838) for a discount on our campsites, the only thing you'll have to pay for (besides some of your food). The half-price deal puts us in a primitive campsite for $7.50 a night or one with electricity and water  for $15.00 per night (read on for details about downloading the coupon you'll need). The primitive sites are closer to the river (you can launch a boat from some of them) and the developed sites are closer to bath and showers. There are two ramps and several piers in the park.

The discount is good for Friday night before the cleanup and Saturday night after the cleanup.

Saturday night at 7:00 we will gather for a dutch treat dinner at Gainsridge Dinner Club. The meal here was certainly the hit of last year's goings-on. Those who don't wish to attend the dinner are welcome to hang back and paddle or camp at Roland Cooper State Park.

If you can, arrive early on Friday and attend ASRT's quarterly meeting.

The Alabama Scenic River Trail's Quarterly Meeting will be held at 2:00, Friday, July 30th at the Ferry Terminal Building of the Gees Bend Ferry. The Ferry Terminal is located one mile west of the Camden Bypass where Highway 10 intersects Highway 28. This intersection is where Hardees and Piggly Wiggly are located. Head west from here on 28 towards Millers Ferry Campground for one mile. The Ferry Terminal is on the right at the intersection of Earl Hilliard Road and Highway 28.

After the meeting we'll make plans to travel to Thomasville where we will be treated to dinner at 7:00 at the mid-town home of ASRT vice president Linda Vice. If the weather allows, we will stroll historic Thomasville on a walking tour conducted by Linda. We'll return to the campground in time for a decent night's sleep before next morning's cleanup call.
