Wild About Our Refuge—Lower Cahaba River
Dates:

Bibb County
Price:

Description:
On the weekend of June 11th, 12th, 13th come join us in Centreville, Alabama as we camp and explore the wild beauty of the Cahaba River. The Cahaba is one of the few remaining rivers left in the United States, that has no dam on it. The river is still just like Mother Nature made it, wild and beautiful.

Registration begins Friday afternoon at the Park.

Centreville is located just off Highway 5 west of Birmingham. The park is located at 421 Montevallo Road, Centreville. Click here for a map and directions.

We plan to camp on Her Banks in the Park at Centreville. Saturday of our event the 'Wild About Our Refuge ' Festival will also be going on. After our float trip we encourage participants to attend the festival .

We have two float trips planned one that will start upstream of our camp and taking out at camp (about 12 miles). On Sunday's trip we will put in at camp and go down the river and shuttle back (about ten miles). Don't let the distances fool you—the Cahaba moves right along. Our speed over the water will be good.

Centreville has just opened this section of the park that we will be camping in. The plan is to eventually make a complete campground out of it, but for now it will be a semi-primitive camp. There are porcelain bathrooms but they are located at the other end of the park, so we will have a Port-O-Let near the camp to save the walking. Showers will be our camp showers, provided by the Mobile Sierra Club. There are fire rings in the camping area, so fires will be allowed in the fire rings, BBQ grills, or outdoor fireplaces.
  • ASRT will serve coffee and instant type breakfast items.
  • Each Participant will provide all their own meals except Breakfast.
  • Bring lunch, snacks and water for the float trips.

You will need for camping:
  • Camping gear for each participant
  • Cooking gear for your meals
  • Food, coolers, etc.

This will be a base camp , so no moving once we set up.

You will need for the float trips:
  • An appropriate boat. The Cahaba is shallow in some places and has a gravelly bottom with occasional rocks, so your boat should be one you don't mind getting a little scratched on the bottom. There is a fairly strong current on the Cahaba River like that of a creek.
  • Spare Paddle.
  • Life Jacket PFDs are required by our insurance and will be worn by ALL
  • participants when on the water.
  • Lunch, snacks and plenty of water—it gets hot in June.
  • Sunscreen and bug repellant.

Our shuttle to the put in is on Saturday and take out  is on Sunday. We'll use the buddy system and carpool to get the boats back. ASRT will have a flatbed trailer for the boats. All boats will be looked after until they are returned to camp.

Come explore the Wild Beauty of the Cahaba with us.

Registration Price is $35.00
